The LAUNCH Family and Our Innovators: What Are the Benefits?

At LAUNCH we are currently reaching out to communities, companies, academia, networks/hubs, incubator, accelerators, embassies and municipalities all around the world to find up to 10 innovators that should be part of the new generation of circular innovators. This year’s theme is ‘Design and Manufacturing for a Circular Economy’, and we encourage everybody with an innovation that is anywhere between pilot-stage and ready-for-market to apply.

However, are you unsure of what happens after you have applied? There are many who are curious what happens if their innovation is chosen to be in our top group. In the following you will learn why dozens of innovators have joined our ecosystem and the benefits they have received.

How does the LAUNCH program work?

As a LAUNCH Innovator you will get access to a world class network of investors, pioneering companies and mentors from our LAUNCH partners IKEA, NIKE, EBAY, Novozymes, Kvadrat and other leading global organizations, who are all ready to help scale your innovation. This network of industry professionals know what it takes for innovations to succeed and achieve sustainable growth.

The first step is submitting a very easy application via our online submission page. In this application you will have the opportunity to briefly explain your innovation, its sustainability impact, and your motivation for applying. After the deadline, our team of expert reviewers help us determine which innovations are most relevant and potentially disruptive for a shift towards a more circular economy. Once these subject matter experts have helped us narrow down the numbers we conduct phone interviews to dive deeper into those selected innovations.

Next, we invite the top innovators to join our LAUNCH community. The selected innovators are invited to attend this year’s LAUNCH Nordic Forum at Kvadrat’s Headquaters in Ebeltoft, Denmark on November 29-30, 2017. Here they will get the opportunity to present and discuss their solutions with 35 industry executives, circular economy and materials experts, government officials and investors. These “council members” have agreed to contribute their expertise, insight, guidance to our innovators, making commitments wherever possible. The council members will help in creating access to new markets, networks, testing, or resources that can help grow and scale the innovators’ solutions.

Finally, following the LAUNCH Nordic Forum, innovators will take part in an accelerator program to help them bring their innovations to scale. The innovators will receive an action plan tailored for their specific company and needs. This action plan includes each council members’ commitments and suggestions to help our innovators – the progress of each plan is checked on a continuous basis by the LAUNCH team.

In the following two videos, Vigga Svensson (LAUNCH Innovator 2014) and Siddharth Hande (LAUNCH Innovator 2016) are interviewed at the World Circular Economy Forum 2017 about what they have gained from being part of the LAUNCH community.

Vigga Svensson, CEO and founder of VIGGA.US was a 2014 Innovator and she is still participating in the LAUNCH ecosystem. In the video she elaborates on what she has gained and still gains from being part of the LAUNCH ecosystem.

Siddharth Hande, founder of from Kabadiwalla Connect became one of the 2016 Innovators, and in the following video he elaborates on what he has learned and achieved through the LAUNCH ecosystem.

The LAUNCH Community

The unique thing about the LAUNCH innovation challenges is that once you have been selected as a top innovator, you will always be an important part of the community. For example, the LAUNCH community of circular innovators, partners, leading researchers and business executives met this spring at the Circular Innovation Summit at Nike’s headquarter in Portland on March 3, 2017. Fifteen past and present LAUNCH innovators were selected to participate in the Summit. They discussed how to find ways to be more efficient, effective, and economically viable with the limited resources on planet Earth and also discussed some of the key systems changes that are needed to drive circular solutions. You can read more about the event here.

Join the design revolution to enable Circular Economy

Imagine a world where every product was a service. A future of zero ownership. A future where all products were designed to last, to be reused, repaired and recycled keeping products and materials in the loop. It sounds amazing, right? This year LAUNCH invites up to 10 innovators to join a design revolution to help make Circular Economy a reality.

Cady Coleman

At the World Circular Economy Forum (WCEF) in Helsinki June 5th 2017, LAUNCH  partners will be announcing this year’s Innovation Challenge: Design & Manufacturing for a Circular Economy. We seek innovators globally with the potential to create a shift in the way we design and manufacture for a circular and inclusive society. We urge individuals, teams, start-ups and established companies and organisations to apply, and help us find the answers to this year’s challenge.

Joining us for the announcement of this years LAUNCH Innovation Challenge will be WCEF 2017 Keynote Speaker Dr. Cady Coleman, former NASA Astronaut and polymer chemist.

“Never before has international collaboration been more important to accelerate our transition to a more sustainable way of life on earth. I look forward to joining the World Circular Economy Forum in Helsinki to help connect businesses, governments, cities and innovators who are working to enable this transition”, says Dr. Cady Coleman, former NASA Astronaut.

This year LAUNCH offers up to 10 innovators the unique opportunity to join and get access to the LAUNCH network of industry pioneers, government, investors and previous innovators to collectively work to build and accelerate the innovations. This will include receiving personal mentoring and help to test, pilot and scale the innovations.

The LAUNCH partners look forward to this year’s innovators and their solutions and how they can help create new joint ventures and accelerate the circular economy even further:

Håkan Nordkvist IKEA opening

“At IKEA Group we want to play an active role in the transition to a circular economy. This year we are looking for innovators, disruptive ideas and fresh mindsets who can inspire the whole industry to design products and services for a circular economy”, says Håkan Nordkvist, Head of Sustainability Innovation, IKEA Group.

One critical component in enabling a Circular Economy is that we start designing and manufacturing products in new ways. If products are to last, reused, repaired and recycled we need to empower designers and manufacturers to make better choices regarding materials, binders, coating and manufacturing technologies:

“New design and manufacturing processes are critical to accelerate the transition to a Circular Economy. At Novozymes we look forward to work with and help innovators from around the world, who can help inspire and lead this transition”, says Claus Stig Pedersen, Head of Corporate Sustainability, Novozymes.

Vigga Svensson is a 2014 LAUNCH Nordic Innovator, who recently won the Design Design Award 2017 on best customer experience. Design is at the heart of her success and to this she says:

Circular Economy is taking off – meet the innovators & pioneers paving the way…

The shift to a circular economy requires new levels of innovation, collaboration and collective action. To accelerate the shift we teamed up 10 Circular Economy innovators with industry pioneers including LAUNCH partners Nike Inc., IKEA Group, eBay, Novozymes, Kvadrat and several Nordic government institutions at this years LAUNCH Circular Inovation Summit March 2-3 at Nike HQ in Portland.

Here is a sneak-peek into the Summit and the collaboration and conversations between 10 LAUNCH Circular Economy Innovators, partners and industry pioneers:

At LAUNCH we believe the shift towards a circular economy requires new innovations, collaborations and not least action. As the world develop we need to meet new and growing demands in the future – this will require products designed for disassembly and reuse, efficient take back processes and business models that keep materials in play longer and more effectively.

Cyrus Wadia, VP for Sustainable Business Innovation at Nike underlined the importance of collaboration when he stated “We can’t do this alone“. We need innovations that support the circular economy and partners gathering around the innovations to reach a more circular future.

Such innovations are represented in the solutions provided by LAUNCH innovators. At the Summit entrepreneur Vigga Svensson of Vigga.us and Håkan Nordqvist, Director of Sustainability at IKEA, talked about why it’s imperative to entice consumers to be part of a sustainable culture.

Siddharth Hande of Kabadiwalla Connect and Amy Millington of eBay brought another important perspective to understanding circular economy as they talked about the importance of inclusivity and understanding the local context especially in the developing world.

Vigga Svensson of Vigga.Us and Siddharth Hande of Kabadiwalla Connect both represent new business models and solutions in a circular economy – at the LAUNCH website you can find more videos of LAUNCH Innovators describing their circular solutions within; recycling of cotton, green chemistry, platforms, technologies, waste to resource, supply chains, ecosystems and much more.
